Plants for Shady Areas

Are you looking to grow something on the north side of your home or under a heavy tree or shrub canopy? You have come to the right place, this page is filled with our favorite shade-loving and shade-tolerant plants. There's plants for most any spot: coral bells with with foliage from the palest green to the nearly black, hellebore with flowers in all shades of the rainbow and later this season we will add hostas and ferns.

New shade plants for 2010: Heuchera Autumn Leaves, Berry Smoothie, Electric Lime and Southern Comfort; Heucherella Sweet Tea; Tiarella Cascade Creeper and Happy Trails.

Many plants will grow in the shade, even coneflowers and daylilies! Some of the sunloving varieties will let you know they'd rather be in the sun by growing leggy, leaning over and sometimes even showing you what mold and mildew look like (it's not pretty). So take a look at the shade selections to add color and interest to that shady spot in your garden.
Check our shipping page for fall dates to your area and check back as we are adding plants and updating the pages.

Sizes are listed as 'starter-size', '4-inch pot', 'quart', etc. The size refers to the size of the rootball and is not an indication of the amount of top-growth. Many perennials will be dormant during the winter and ship with very little foliage in early spring.

Here's examples of our sizes. Picture was taken in July and shows coneflowers. We do not ship plug sizes.

We recycle and reuse plastic pots, most of our plants will ship in a plantable paper sleeve made from biodegradable newsprint.

A vigorous, widely clumping heuchera with broad leaves. This one seems to glow from a distance! The new leaves are deep maroon-purple, while the older ones are deep plum purple with darker veining. The fine hairs which cover the leaves catch the light, giving them a "frosted" appearance.

Helleborus Winter Jewels 'Apricot Blush'
'Apricot Blush' was one of the O'Byrne's top sellers during their Hellebore Open Garden Days and it's easy to see why. The unique coloration of this variety is perfectly described by its name. Since it is from seed, each flower is a little different but all flowers fall in the color range of peachy yellow to apricot with varying degrees of bright rose veining, speckling, and picotee edges.
